Hand Held Coffee Grinder
This project came about as a design exercise to scratch my itch to design and build a simple machine. The result of this project is a hand-held conical burr grinder.
Scope
Design a hand held coffee grinder based on inspiration from existing products. Burr design is not in scope. Design is based around a TIMEMORE Spike-to-Cut (S2C 660) Stainless Steel conical burr set.
What is so special?
There are lots of ways to grind whole coffee beans into brew-ready coffee and there are advantages to each.
Pre-ground coffee - ease of use, usually very consistent, loss of freshness
Blade style grinder - cheap, inconsistent grind size distribution, hard to control grind size. Leads to inconsistent coffee.
Burr style grinder (conical and flat generalized) - more expensive, consistent grind control and size distribution.
Roller style grinder - very expensive, reserved for industrial use, very consistent grind control and size distribution.
Why is grind size important?
Different coffee making approaches require different grind sizes. Each approach opens up a slightly different flavor profile.
Coarse: Immersion brew - French press, cold brew
Medium-Coarse: Pour over
Medium: Drip coffee
Fine: Espresso, Moka pot
Extra fine: Turkish coffee

Results
The final design allows for full (outer) conical burr alignment tuning using three ball point set screws. Grind size is continuously variable, controlled by twisting the upper adjustment dial on a thread pitch of 0.5mm. A detent is avoided to allow even finer tuning.
The final design cost for a QTY1 fabrication run, including all purchased and custom parts is $426.36 USD. Prices below.
